Facebook Groups and Wedding Planning

Today I've got Facebook groups on my mind. And not just wedding-specific groups, but groups in general where you can post "In search of" to an audience of thousands and crowd source hundreds of responses.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Here's an example: someone asks for suggestions for venues within a certain region, desired guest count, and a few other descriptors of the space they're looking for. No mention of budget. Immediately, a slew of couples, vendors, and venues all rush in to share their two cents.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Want to know what goes through a wedding planners head when reading? After scanning the comments section for a minute, I can rule out about 90% of suggestions. Literally just by reading the list.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Venues are shamelessly plugging their own spaces even if they don't quite fit the bill. Vendors are posting links to venues that they love to work at, without knowing whether the venue even fits all of the descriptors listed, and then adding "If you need a photographer, too, I'm available!"⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

So now you have dozens of venues to sort through and links to vendors that you didn't even ask for. You're likely to feel frustrated after reaching out to a few spots and realizing they're either over budget or don't fit what you were looking for. Where do you even go from there?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

This is why crowd sourcing how to plan your wedding is never a good idea. It's actually wildly counterproductive. To get quality information, you need to talk to an expert.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

If you're looking for suggestions on favorite online retailers for wedding shoes or embroidered robes, FB groups are a great place for that.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Crowd sourcing help to find a wedding venue on Facebook? Big nope from me. That's an incredibly expensive and critical decision to be asking the audience, don't you think?
